7 Reasons Why People SHOULDN'T Debate

After a lot of thinking and reflecting, we found out that everything that we have said in our 1st post was a bunch of crap. We are taking back what we have said.

■ Reasons 1 & 3:
It enhances critical thinking.
It encourages efficient research for the subject of debate.
»
One word, ladies and gentlemen, "Internet". Students nowadays, see research as browsing the net for articles that match your subject of research. No one cares of the authenticity of a good research anymore. What debaters are doing now, is just take ideas from a big box. No critical thinking is really involved.

■ It promotes effective communication.
»If you think that those sophisticated words that come out of the debaters' mouths are their own, then you should check again. Most of the debaters would just memorize their well-prepared and well-thought out ideas and opinions to avoid embarrassment and humiliation in front of their opponents.

■ It fosters teamwork.
»
Many would think that having more than 1 person on a debate team means maximizing your chances of winning. Contrary to that, number does not matter. You only need 1 person that is brilliant in giving arguments and rebuttals and you are sure to be the winning team. Besides, when you do POI's or arguments, you don't need to consult your teammates. You can be a loose cannon and still win the debate.

■ It helps stimulate informed judgement about crucial issues.
»Debates don't restrict you from preparing well-thought out arguments and rebuttals for that arguments, right? So, all you need to do is to make sure you have arguments for one side and good rebuttals for the other. And in the end, after the debate, you always go for the side that you think is best. You don't even try to hear out the reasons of the side you are opposing to, no matter how convincing their arguments are.

■ It promotes courtesy and respect.
»When a speaker presents his arguments or rebuttals, he will try to present the arguments or rebuttals deliberately. When POI's are raised and the speaker is not done with his presentation, he will try to ignore it until he is done. Sometimes, inappropriate manners show up when this happens. No matter how hard they try to be courteous and respectful, they always end up "killing" the opposing side with their words.

■ It provides a better alternative to war and violence.
»Even though it may provide a better alternative to war, it sure does not provide any peace. Valuable ideas and opinions are always presented well in debates, but the problem is, debaters try to sound more sophisticated and intelligent that not all listeners are able to "listen" well to their ideas and opinions. There is still within us the Neanderthal mind that still believes in domination through sheer power. Unless debaters are able to connect and influence those minds with their ideas, then, peace will always be out of our reach.
